The death toll in a landslide in eastern Uganda has risen to 55, as the search and rescue efforts for hundreds of missing continues.

Head of Uganda’s Red Cross, Michael Nataka, said Tuesday that the landslide has buried three villages in Bududa district near Mount Elgon.

Officials fear the rain-triggered landslide in the mountainous region, which lies some 275 kilometers (170 miles) east of the capital, Kampala, may have buried another 350 people.

Officials expect more landslides in the coming weeks, as further heavy rains were in the forecast for the region.

Landslides are part of life in Uganda during the rainy season, but the latest instance has been considered quite serious for its high number of victims.
